Both his mother and father were performers and martial artists in the famous Chinese Opera. Grandmaster Lau’s mother trained him in the Northern Shaolin style from the time he could walk, and drilled him constantly. When he was about twelve years old, a fellow classmate at LaSalle Academy helped him in a fight against several English boys. It was during this fight that Grandmaster Lau first saw Wing Chun in action. He was so impressed, he immediately found a school to learn the system. Master Jiu Wan accepted him as a student, and he began to train in secret, fearful that his mother would discover that he was training in another style. Grandmaster Lau trained with Jiu Wan until age nineteen, when he left Hong Kong to come to America. He soon settled in an area of Brooklyn known as Flatbush.  As Grandmaster Lau opened his school and got to know the local merchants, he discovered that crime in his neighborhood was widespread. He decided to use his Wing Chun skills to defend his neighborhood. He soon became well known and appreciated as a vigilante, both by the shopkeepers and the police. As his reputation spread, he came to the attention of retired General Mitchell WerBell III, who was scouting for instructors for his counter-terrorist training camp, SIONICS. General WerBell recruited Grandmaster Lau to teach hand to hand combat at the camp in Powder Springs, Georgia. Grandmaster Lau so impressed the General with his abilities that he soon became the camp’s chief instructor and the General’s personal bodyguard. Shortly after General WerBell’s death in 1983, Grandmaster Lau again opened a Wing Chun academy, this time in Smyrna, Georgia. His school and his reputation grew in the Atlanta area, and he was often featured in news specials and magazine and newspaper articles. In the early 1990s, Grandmaster Lau was finally able to realize his dream of designing and building a Wing Chun temple. He and his students labored for two years to build the academy, nestled in a wooded Atlanta suburb. Grandmaster Lau formed his school into a family. He treats his students as if they were his sons and daughters, and the students treat each other as brothers and sisters. The school that he designed and built is their home. Grandmaster Lau is currently finishing an instructional Wing Chun video tape for the branches of his family in New York and Tampa as well as for other serious Wing Chun students. Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa (born September 27, 1950) is a Japanese American actor. In addition to his extensive film work, he has appeared on television in Star Trek: The Next Generation – ” Encounter at Farpoint ” (1987), Thunder in Paradise (1995), Nash Bridges (1996), Baywatch: Hawaiian Wedding(2003), and Heroes (2007). He also provided the voice of Sin Tzu for the video game Batman: Rise of Sin Tzu. He played the part of Earth Alliance security officer Morishi in Babylon 5 – ” Convictions “. He played a soul-stealing sorcerer Shang Tsung in a film adaptation of the video game Mortal Kombat. He was born in Tokyo, Japan, the son of an actress from Tokyo and a Japanese-American father who served in the United States Army (stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Fort Polk, Louisiana and Fort Hood, Texas ). He was raised in various cities. He began acting in high school while attending Duarte High School in Southern California. He attended the University of Southern California, and was an exchange student in Japan. His breakthrough as an actor came when he was cast as the Eunuch Chang in The Last Emperor(1987). In 1989 he posed as an undercover agent of the Hong Kong Narcotics Board in the James Bond film License to Kill. In 1991 he starred alongside Dolph Lundgren and Brandon Lee in the action film Showdown in Little Tokyo , where he played the role of Yakuza boss Yoshida. He also starred alongside James Hong and Jeff Speakman in the same year in the film The Perfect Weapon, where he played Kai, an assistant to the Korean mafia families. Many remember him from the movieMortal Kombat (1995) as the shape-shifting sorcerer Shang Tsung , and as the deadly pirate leader Kabai Singh in The Phantom (1996). Tagawa is among the actors, producers and directors interviewed in the documentary The Slanted Screen (2006), directed by Jeff Adachi , about the representation of Asian and Asian-American men in Hollywood. Most recently, Tagawa was selected for the role of Heihachi Mishima in Tekken , the film adaptation of the popular video game franchise. He was also featured as the voice of Brushogun in Teen Titans: Trouble in Tokyo. His mother tried to persuade the delivery man to take it to their fifth floor apartment with an offer of ten cents. “I’ll pay you a buck not to ask me for help” was the wisecracking response. Henry struggled but managed to lug his new equipment, piece by piece, up the five floors. Little did he know that this modest purchase would forever shape not only his body but also his life. “Hank” progressed to working out at the local YMCA and began competing in body building and powerlifting contests. While at the “Y”, he was approached by another weight trainer and educated on the virtues of becoming a professional wrestler. Veteran grappler Bibber McCoy helped to train the muscular upstart. An arranged meeting with New York promoter and PWHF Inductee Toots Mondt began seventeen year old Hank’s mat career. He soon started working at the local New York and New Jersey arenas billed as Hank Daniels, “The Minnesota Farm Boy”, although he had never stepped foot into Minnesota. The confidence that Hank gained from his chiseled physique also led him to pursue stand-up comedy. Following a short period of time honing his skills in local establishments, teenager Garrett began rotating his evenings inside the squared circle as the “Farm Boy” and in front of a microphone as Hank Garrett. “I was scheduled to wrestle Killer Kowalski in California” Hank recently told this writer, “Killer picked me up at the airport and couldn’t have been nicer to me. We got in the ring and he proceeded to slap me across the face to open the match. I was pretty taken by this unexpected move so I banged him with my best forearm but didn’t even move his feet. I don’t remember the rest of the match but later in the locker room Kowalski said to me ‘Hey Hank, why did you keep running past me in the ring yelling out Mama, Mama ?’ “. Despite five years of competition against many wrestlers including legendary stars such as Lenny Montana, Baron Leone and Mike Mazurki, Hank hung up his wrestling trunks for good and made his way to the Catskills and the Borscht Belt to concentrate on his comedy. A great story teller with a wealth of dialects, Hank cultivated his signature “clean” comic routine working as an opening act for such greats as Tony Bennett, Jerry Vale and Della Reese. He holds the unique distinction of being the first Anglo comedian to ever grace the stage of the Apollo Theater in his Harlem hometown. Hank’s first venture into television took place in New York as Officer Nicholson in the iconic television series, Car 54, Where Are You?. California called again but this time it was for another television series in which Hank teamed with James Earl Jones in a show conceived for them entitled Paris. “James was a wonderful actor” Hank stated, “and he probably taught me more than anyone about the profession”. . Garrett has also been featured in a number of other classic episodic television shows such as Columbo, Dragnet, Kojak and The Twilight Zone. Hank has also found great success on the silver screen. He has worked with such stars as Al Pacino, James Coburn, and Sophia Loren to mention only a few. Hank described Loren as the most beautiful woman he has ever met. In a “stunt that went wrong” while filming a movie with Sophia, Hank suddenly found himself barely conscious and cradled in the arms of Ms. Loren, who yelled to bystanders to send for an ambulance. Garrett, still in a daze, recalled following up by saying “but, take your time!” Unfortunately, ill-fated stunts have not been uncommon to Garrett. While filming a fighting scene with Amsterdam’s own Kirk Douglas, Kirk reassured Hank that he had never actually hit another actor in all of years of performing. He then proceeded to inadvertently hammer Garrett to the face. Hank graciously informed Douglas that he had just blown his reputation. Perhaps Garrett’s greatest personal satisfaction garnered within the movie industry was winning the New York Film Critics Award for his role in Three Days of the Condor. When I discussed this movie with Hank, I learned he was not always on the receiving end of ill-fated stunts as he jokingly lamented, “I never recall hurting anyone as a wrestler but I accidentally broke Robert Redford’s nose during the filming of Condor.” As a seasoned veteran, Hank lists literally hundreds of credits in movies and television. Today Hank enjoys an active life in Los Angeles where he chooses to perform his crafts without an automobile after being a passenger in tragic accident many years ago. “You meet the most interesting people in both buses and limos” Hank recently stated. Garrett continues to be in great physical shape by pursuing weight training as his hobby and monitoring his diet. He also has had a long time passion for martial arts where he has achieved the status of a Black Belt. and been inducted into the World Karate Union Hall of Fame. Garrett actively participates in many celebrity autograph shows throughout the country and performs his comedy routines at corporate outings and special events. In addition, with his powerful and youthful voice, Garrett can be regularly heard on the animated television shows Garfield and G. I. Joe. Hank donates much of his proceeds from his appearances to his favorite charity, the Disabled American Veterans. “Giving back is what it is all about for me” Hank told this writer.” I have been very blessed in my life and I would like to return some of my successes to those that have been less fortunate and who have sacrificed for our country.”

The Alvisi family originally from Abruzzi, Italy moved to the United States in 1962. They planted their roots in Coatesville, Pennsylvania where Mark was raised. From his earliest memories, Mark was extremely athletic as a kid; he played many sports and excelled in Martial Arts. At 12 years old he ran across some bodybuilding magazines that made an indelible impression on him. This is when the seed was planted and the love of bodybuilding began. Mark would dabble with weight lifting in his home basement even though he didn’t have much in the way of real equipment. This lasted through his teens until he graduated high school at 18 years old and joined the Army. While in the Army he completed basic training, Advanced Individual Training and Airborne school. It was in the Army that he had the ability to weight train regularly since he now had access to a real gym. Not only was he quick to develop physically, but he also developed an unshakeable work ethic that would eventually carry over into his bodybuilding career. He successfully completed his term of service in Fort Bragg, North Carolina in 3rd Special Forces Group Support Command as a Sergeant E-5. Upon completion of his term he made the move to South Florida. Once in Florida he was exposed to the competition side of the sport for the first time and was convinced by the head trainer of his gym, a NPC judge and IFBB Pro, that he should compete. Mark, competitive in nature, made the decision to compete in his first bodybuilding contest in April of 2001. That proved to be a very wise decision as he won the Overall at his inaugural show. After that victory, Mark Alvisi was hooked. He went on to obtain Professional status in the NABF and Musclemania organizations before switching to the NPC in 2003. Mark’s rock like work ethic finally paid off in July of 2009 where he won the Overall at the NPC USA Championships and earned his IFBB Professional status. Mark has had many incredible opportunities since 2001 when he began his career. He has worked for various sports nutrition and publication companies such as Gaspari Nutrition and Muscular Development since that time in either sales or as a sponsored athlete. https://ucwradio.com/podcast/media/2015-05-15_chris_vanessariddle_interviewucw_complete.mp3 VANESSA’S JOURNEY BY CHRIS & CONNIE RIDDLE In Feb 2009 our then 8 yr. old daughter Vanessa, was diagnosed with Stage 4 (High-Risk) Neuroblastoma, a very rare, aggressive and difficult to treat form of childhood cancer. Fewer than 100 children in the UK are diagnosed with neuroblastoma each year, most of which are below 5 yrs. old and generally have a better prognosis as the older the child is the worse the prognosis is. Since Feb 09, Vanessa has undergone many different treatments at Yorkhill Hospital in Glasgow, these include; 12 rounds of High Dose Chemotherapy, two 7 hour surgical operations, removal of one of her kidneys, a stem cell transplant, Radiotherapy, Retinoic Acid treatment and Immunotherapy treatment……all of which was agonising to watch as parents never mind to have to endure as a child! Having undergone all this difficult and often very painful treatment the fact remained that due to a high relapse rate the long term prognosis for Vanessa’s survival remained very poor with less than a 40% survival rate. All the same, Vanessa finished her treatment at Yorkhill Hospital in Aug 2010 and was given the all clear. In Dec 2011 after routine scans, Connie and I were given the devastating news that Vanessa had relapsed. She has many hotspots on the skull, neck, spine, leg & knees. The UK doctors have told us that this time round there is very little chance of survival; “much less than 10%” they said, as we do not have any relapse protocols in the UK. This is due to the Government not investing any money into relapse treatments for this disease. This is a very different story to the United States & Europe where there are many relapse protocols and taking her there will dramatically increase her chances of long term survival. We now find ourselves in the position of urgently having to take Vanessa abroad for relapse therapy treatment which the NHS will not fund.
